What is The Nigeria Project?

WHAT The Nigeria Project is a not-for-profit initiative. It was set up in late 2011 to restore the link between Nigerian citizens and their public servants -especially their elected representatives. We want to maintain a live directory of political, legal and economic information which will grow and become more comprehensive with time and in the future act as a historical archive. The first step, to getting here is to list all current Nigerian politicians, at state and national level, following the April 2011 elections. Until this is completed, the project will remain in a development or “beta” phase. WHY It is obvious that the duties of the executive, legislators, the judiciary and local government officials were not well understood by many citizens and most holders of office. We use the term “public servants” because we believe that each time the phrase is mentioned it will remind Nigerian citizens that ultimately their officials are accountable to them only. We hope to go some way to redress this “democratic deficit” and use The Nigerian Constitution as our starting point. Our first goal is to have a record of every single elected individual in Nigeria. This list will be regularly updated during elections and by-elections. Our second goal is to document the activities of these and other public servants, to help explain what they are doing on behalf of citizens, to find out how we can help them achieve these goals and to help improve expected outcomes in as many spheres as we can. ……and this is just the beginning. HOW We need help to do this and hope that you will become a part of our group. Please join our facebook page here and subscribe to our newsletter. Thank you. Last Updated: September 2011
